Remote Computer Repair vs. Downloading New Software

FixIt99.com owner, Mike Scherenberg, digs through the web to help discuss weekly technology issues, concerns or general questions. This week's article explains the difference between a LIVE support tech vs. downloading software fixes.
So your computer is running slow, it takes much longer each time to turn it on; you think you need a new PC? How about random errors preventing you from working normally? Installing more software is not the ideal solution.
Millions of pieces of software are downloaded, purchased, and installed claiming to fix computer problems. These software titles typically install themselves, run a series of scans, then produce a list of problems that can be fixed for a fee. Many of these online tools may identify the problem for FREE, but the actual repair or removal of the problem, always has a cost.
Running these programs also comes with risk. Fixing registry entries or disabling startup services is dangerous and may leave you inoperable. Don't do anything you’re not sure of.
Remote Computer Repair, offered by FixIt99.com, allows for same day computer repair on all computer problems. With online computer repair, a LIVE tech actually connects to your PC while you watch the repair taking place as it is happening. The remote tech is available online for questions through a chat window or directly on the phone.
Remote Computer Repair is extremely safe. A tech can be reached either via chat session online at www.fixit99.com or via the toll-free number, 866-228-4486. A technician will walk you through basic diagnostics steps to see if your problem can be repaired remotely.
Let’s walk through the process of LIVE support vs. software install.
Software Purchase
Installation and download is Free
Initial Scan is free and may allow removal of programs
RISK – New software is now installed on an already slow machine
RISK – Software will ask the user what to delete. This may lead to a crashed system.
RISK – The software will ask to ‘ACTIVATE’ it with a credit card. Even if a customer pays, the problem may still exist.

Live Fixit99.com Tech
Initial consultation, phone call, or chat session is Free
Initial Scan will be performed by certified technician
BENEFIT – The technician is actually removing programs to help the performance, not adding
BENEFIT – The technician will work with the use on what to delete.
BENEFIT – The customer is never charged until the issue is resolved

Online computer repair is the fastest and cheapest way of meeting your PC repair needs. With Fixit99.com we offer a Free Online PC Consultation for Your Computer Issues and can help, anywhere, anytime. Fix your PC online today at www.fixit99.com.

Fixit99.com-Helping Fix Computers Remotely

MS Tech Solutions, a company that focuses on small-business IT and tech consulting, launched Fixit99.com this year to bring consumer tech support straight to homes.

Fixit99.com handles all of the computer support that technicians used to do on site. Today, however, owner Mike Scherenberg and his staff can handle customers’ computer problems from Fixit99.com’s office in the Chicago suburbs.

“We want to get the message across that the days of unplugging your computer and driving it to the big-box store to get fixed, those don’t have to exist,” he said.

Fixit99.com provides secure support remotely. Customers log onto Fixit99.com’s site through a secure Internet connection. That provides the tech staff with the chance to clean out viruses from a computer, reinstall software or change the startup settings to improve performance.

“Some customers are concerned when we connect to their computer,” Scherenberg said. “But it’s a one-time secure connection that the customer initiates. They can watch us do whatever we need to do and it’s 100 percent secure. Once we’re done, the customer sees a visual representation that we’re off their computer, and we can never initiate connections again.

“From a security connection, it’s the strongest way possible. You’re not leaving it at a store, or not watching the techs working. The remote service offers flexibility for the customer.”

“I wanted to focus on small-business needs,” he said. “With this economy, businesses were downsizing and cutting their IT staff, and I wanted to do more of an on-demand service.”

In the years since his interest in computers peaked, Scherenberg said the business model of computer support changed. And that’s why he started Fixit99.com, with on-demand tech support for a flat rate of $99, along with subscription based services.

“When you would buy a computer for $1,000, you wouldn’t mind spending $200 or $300 to fix it,” he said. “It was an expensive investment. But now with computers below $400, the business model of having someone drive out and fix it no longer makes sense. Now we can have a tech out there. We can create a service the customer can count on, and it’s a U.S.-based company.”

Scherenberg said business had been “great” since Fixit99.com’s launch, with calls doubling each month since June and a growing customer base.

The service is not yet 24/7, but the owner said all requests would be handled the same day, whether by phone, e-mail or online inquiry. “If we establish a connection and don’t fix it, we won’t charge anything,” he said. “We won’t charge them for something that can’t get fixed.”

Viruses, Spyware or Adware, what’s the difference – FixIt99.com Helps

FixIt99.com owner, Mike Scherenberg, digs through the web to help discuss weekly technology issues, concerns or general questions.

This week's article is one of the things most of our customers are confused about, "What's the difference between Viruses, Spyware and Adware"?

One of the biggest slowdowns of a PC is caused by viruses, adware, or spyware. This accounts for almost 80% of the reasons a PC may have slowed down. Are you protected?

What is a virus?

A virus is a piece of malicious software code written to cause some kind of damage to a computer system or network or even the Internet itself. Viruses spread, similar to their biological namesake, from one machine to another and can spread havoc wherever they go. They are most commonly spread by opening email attachments, executing a program accidently online, or sharing files. Viruses often copy themselves from file to file, and transmit themselves over networks. A virus may infect an e-mail or a web page, then attempt to infect the computer system of anyone who accesses those e-mails or web pages. Before network connections were prevalent in the home, viruses commonly spread when people exchanged floppy disks containing infected games and documents.

When protecting a PC with anti-virus software, it is important to only have one-piece of antivirus software installed at a time. Due to the nature of AV products, often files are locked or secured to prevent malicious viruses from infecting. With more than one layer of antivirus protection installed, it may cause system conflicts, making your system inoperable.

What is spyware?

Spyware, Malware, or Adware relates to the same thing. It is software that performs surveillance on a computer system, usually without the rightful owner’s permission. Spyware programs may log keystrokes, keep a list of web pages visited, spy on e-mail, or attempt to gain access to other sensitive information. Spyware may be responsible for reporting your browsing history to marketing companies, or sending your social security number to an identity thief. Very often you click "OK" without reading the terms and conditions and by doing so you agree to have the files installed. An example is you see a "free" program on offer that you think might be useful and download it without thinking. Even some anti-spyware programs install adware and the website earns money from the ads that are clicked on.

Spyware usually does not try to damage the host computer system, since remaining undetected is in its best interest. Spyware’s biggest problem is slowing down a PC. The amount of computer resources it uses up slows your system to a crawl. Adware is not a security problem it is more an annoyance especially when you have ten different programs trying to display ads.

Antivirus vs. Anti-Spyware

“If my computer has anti-virus software, how did I get infected with Spyware?”

That’s the thing; the two forms of malicious content are completely different. Just because you have the latest Anti-Virus software installed, doesn’t mean you’re also searching or cleaning Spyware or Adware infections. Often when we are fixing PCs remotely, we deal with users that have no Spyware protection.

A clean healthy PC should have multiple programs that help prevent and detect these threats.

Spyware, Malware & Adware are three unique threats and should each be treated independently of one another. There are many great FREE tools on the internet, along with a lot of bogus tools. Be careful when selecting and always do your research before installing.
